So, you’ve decided to try Muay Thai — that’s a big (and exciting!) first step. Whether you’re looking to boost your fitness, build confidence, or learn a new skill, your first class at TAG Muay Thai is where the journey begins.
If you’re feeling a little nervous or unsure about what to expect, you’re not alone. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know before stepping into your first Muay Thai class at TAG.
1. Wear the Right Gear
For your first session, you don’t need fancy gear — just comfortable workout clothes that allow freedom of movement. Shorts, leggings, or breathable athletic pants paired with a moisture-wicking t-shirt or tank top are ideal. Avoid clothes with zippers or bulky pockets.
Pro tip: If you’re planning to train regularly, you’ll eventually want to invest in your own hand wraps, gloves, and shin guards.

2. Bring the Basics
We recommend you bring:
- A water bottle (hydration is key!)
- A small towel
- Hand wraps and gloves, if you have them — if not, no worries! We have loaner gear available for first-timers.
Don’t worry about showing up with everything on day one. We’re here to support you from the ground up.
3. Arrive Early
Try to show up about 10-15 minutes early to check in, get a feel for the space, and meet your instructor. You’ll have time to wrap your hands, ask questions, and warm up. Starting a new routine can feel intimidating, but our community is welcoming and supportive from the second you walk in the door.
4. Don’t Stress About Fitness Level
You don’t need to be in peak shape to start Muay Thai. At TAG, we train people of all fitness levels and experience. Whether you’re coming off the couch or already active, we’ll help you train at your own pace while pushing you to improve over time.
Remember: Everyone was a beginner once.
5. Expect to Learn the Fundamentals
Your first class will likely focus on:
- Stance and footwork
- Basic punches, elbows, knees, and kicks
- Partner drills or bag work
- A cool-down stretch
You’ll leave class sweaty, energized, and maybe a little sore — in a good way.
6. Be Open, Stay Curious
Learning Muay Thai is as much about mindset as it is about technique. Don’t worry about getting everything perfect. Ask questions. Laugh at your mistakes. Keep showing up. That’s how growth happens — and that’s what we’re all about at TAG.
